Jewellery Care

Here a few pointers to help your jewellery continue to look its best.

When you’re not wearing it, the best way to keep your jewellery looking in good condition is to keep it away from sunlight in a box, this will also help to reduce scratching and damage to the metal or stones.  Remove your jewellery when you’re doing housework, gardening, swimming or playing sports.

Over time silver can become dull and tarnished.  It can be chemically cleaned with a tarnish removing solution or polish. Rubbing the surface with a silver cloth can also help to revive it.  Remember that white or matt silver will have more of a shiny appearance with the uses of these cloths and that white silver over time, with wear will become more polished.

Silver polish can also be used on 9 and 14 carat yellow gold, 18 and 22 carat gold are said not to tarnish.

Oxidised silver has had a chemical added to it to develop the blackened appearance, over time the surface colour will fade.

With plating a thin layer of metal has been bonded using the electroplating method.  It’s best to keep your plated jewellery in a box to avoid it being scratched.  If your plated jewellery needs to be cleaned, wash with warm soapy water and dry with a soft cloth, avoid using any abrasive polishes.
